Cape George Lighthouse

10 Most Photogenic Lighthouses in Nova Scotia

Known for its lighthouses, and rightly so, Nova Scotia has some of the most beautiful in the world. The photographic opportunities are many, and if you find yourself in this region, you need to check out these gorgeous landmarks.

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse

Peggys Cove Lighthouse

No post like this would be complete without Nova Scotia’s most famous landmark, the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse. This lighthouse is a prime photographer’s location. The shooting location is especially suitable for the capture of sunsets and sunrises. Often littered with tourists, it is usually best to visit early or late in the season when it is cold. Even then a few people will be wandering the rocks. Also, when shooting this stunning lighthouse, please remember to stay off the black rocks!

Louisburg Lighthouse

Louisburg is a great place to visit, but it is easy to miss this lighthouse. The Louisburg Lighthouse is a classic red and white lighthouse that is easily accessible. Surrounded by wildflowers, this lighthouse stands on the site of the first Lighthouse in Nova Scotia. An observant visitor can see the foundation upon which the original stood.

Location: 45.906642, -59.958439

Cape George Lighthosue

Low Point Lighthouse

The first Low Point Lighthouse was an octagonal wood tower, 21 meters (69ft) high. It had a round iron lantern and a 3rd order double bullseye lens manufactured in France. This lighthouse was replaced in 1936 by the current concrete tower, but the restoration reused the original lamp and lens. It has the only remaining circular lantern in Nova Scotia. It is a very photogenic tower with vibrant red and whites and form-contrast between the angular tower and rounded light housing.

Cape Forchu Lighthouse

Cape Forchu Lighthouse

Cape Forchu lighthouse at the entrance to Yarmouth harbour. Since 1839, ships have passed the light tower at Cape Forchu. For decades, it has been a red lantern with alternating red and white faces on the octagonal tower. This pattern contrast and interesting “apple core” style make this lighthouse a photography magnet. Situated on a rocky ocean shore anticipate dramatic photography regardless of the weather.

Cap D'Or Lighthouse

Cap D'Or Lighthouse

The Cape of Gold region, as it translates into English, is named for the particular hue of the incredible sunsets over the water. The Cap D’Or Lighthouse has sat on this cliff edge where the Bay of Fundy runs into the Minas Basin since 1922. Today’s lighthouse, built in 1965, is the only lighthouse facility in Nova Scotia with overnight accommodations.

Cape Auguet Lighthouse

Cap Auget Lighthouse

Cap Auget Lighthouse is a little known square lighthouse. As well, finding a beautiful beacon like this that is not crawling with tourists is a rare find indeed. As well, accessible beaches nearby make this one of the better locations for photographing the windswept beauty of the area. Highly recommended.

Lighthouse on Brier Island

Brier Island Lighthouse

Brier Island is the westernmost part of Nova Scotia and features a stunning lighthouse. The red and white stripes make this a very photogenic beacon. The original Brier Island Lighthouse was built in 1809, but in 1818 it was described as “so vilely constructed and ill lighted” that it was a hazard. By 1832 it was rebuilt. Today, a concrete tower stands in the original place, built in 1944.  Few lighthouses in the region are as picturesque as this one, and it is well worth the trip.

Arisaig Lighthouse

Arisaig Lighthouse

Arisaig Lighthouse is a wonderful photo tour pit stop along the North shore. A replica of the original, the spot features a Dockside Café. Dine on a selection of seafood specialties, including fishcakes and fish chowder. In July and August enjoy ice cream between exposures!

Pugwash Lighthouse

Pugwash Lighthouse

The lighthouse, built in 1962, has an enclosed upper portion and skeletal lower section. The original Pugwash Lighthouse sits on the land of a nearby farm.  The light station is one of the more unique beacons in the province and is perfect for photographs. Combining the green foliage with the rich orange earth of the region will only add to this lighthouses beauty.

After a sweltering week, the fall chill is starting to creep into the morning air where I am in Quebec. That means it’s just a few more weeks for the fair weather photographers out there. Naoshima Island - Naoshima, Japan

Our photo location of the week goes to new user Gonzalo Ruiz Calavera. Gonzalo shares this very cool pumpkin sculpture from Naoshima Island. Naoshima Island has been nicknamed “art island” where the whole island is a museum.  There are two giant pumpkins situated on the island, the Yellow Pumpkin on the Pier overlooking the ocean has become an icon of the island.  The second pumpkin is the Red Pumpkin and is located at the ferry terminal. Michel Bricteux shares a shot of the HD-4 hydrofoil in the museum at the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. Lesser known is the fact that this genius spent much of his life working on various subjects ranging from aerodynamics (aircraft, hydrocopters) to inventions for the hearing impaired. Roman Forum - Rome, Italy

This week’s feature shot goes to Dmitriy Don for this fantastic viewpoint of the Roman Forum. The Forum is a plaza of ruins at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, formerly a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or just the Forum.  For centuries the Forum was the center of day-to-day life in Rome: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs.

Galeone Neptune - Genoa, Italy

Yarrrrrr! We love this shot by Vinicius Melo of Galeone Neptune. The ship is a replica of a 17th-century Spanish galleon. Built-in 1985 for Roman Polanski’s film Pirates, where she portrayed the Spanish ship of the same name. An accurate reproduction above the waterline, but sporting a steel hull and a 400 HP auxiliary engine, the Neptune is currently a tourist attraction in the port of Genoa, where you can tour its interior.

Poll na bPeist - Inis Mor, Ireland

Located at the bottom of cliffs south of Dun Aonghasa on the island of Inis Mor, Ireland. A remarkable place, the geological formation is a true testament to mother nature’s pure beauty and power.

La Grande Hermine - Ontario, Canada

I finally got around to adding this favourite spot of mine. This is Jordan Harbour just West of St Catherines in Ontario, Canada. The long-abandoned ship is called La Grande Hermine and is the forgotten replica of a ship that was navigated in 1535. The replica was built as a floating restaurant for Expo 67 and was moved to its present location in 1997. In 2003, a fire reduced the ship to a charred hulk. Today it sits as a surprising rusting landmark on the way to Niagara Falls. Once again, this is why Lisette and I founded PIXEO. Every photographer should know where this is.

We are so fortunate to have talented photographers like you contributing to the app. We are overwhelmed by your support so far, and can’t wait to see where your images and feedback take us in the future. Thank you again, so much!

We are proud to feature Joe Russo’s fantastic pier shot to start off the week. In this photo, Joe has taken a serene sunrise shot at Belmar Fisherman’s Pier in New Jersey. This location is a wonderfully photogenic spot along the eastern seaboard. We love the purple and magenta hues in this pic and the beautiful whispy water from the long exposure. Thanks Joe!

Brochel Castle, Raasay Island

Scott Goldsworthy explores more castle ruins this week. Brochel Castle sits on Raasay Island’s northeastern shore. The castle is an ingenious fusion of natural rock and masonry, intricate brickwork and lime-mortar, rising sheer out of a stack-like volcanic plug some 15 metres high and commanding a position over the coastline.

Apologies for the delay in the update we had scheduled for last week, there were some issues in the test version, and we’ve sent it back to the developers to rework and retool. Hopefully, we’ll have it out for you this week. We’re off to Kingston today to go shooting, so until next time, keep taking great shots of great spots!

Some amazing photographic viewpoints this week. We received more location submissions than ever, and just like last week, we wish we could feature every one. The development team also has also been hard at work improving the app. We have a new update coming, and it should be out sometime this week. This update will make it easier to give our contributing users exposure and share their fantastic work on our platforms. But enough about all that, let’s look at some pretty pictures!

Montreal, Canada

New user Michel Bricteux submitted a large number of locations this week, and it was hard to narrow it down to which ones should feature. We love this great shot of the fireworks in Montreal and think you’ll agree this is a spectacular shooting location for getting shots of Jacques-Cartier bridge.

Lavender Fields of Spain

Another one from Michel Bricteux, and how can you go wrong with fields of Lavender? Vibrant purple hues in staggered rows make this an enticing viewpoint. This region has an annual festival making it an excellent area for shooting the fragrant and colourful plant.
