Cochem Castle - Photo by Anja

A richly decorated hilltop castle, this is one of the finest examples of the many Bavarian storybook castles. Towering above the city of Cochem, a castle has stood here since the 1600s. However, in 1689 Louis XIV had his troops obliterate the original fortress. It wasn't until 1868 that a wealthy businessman from Berlin, Louis Ravené, had the castle rebuilt, sort of. The current castle does not resemble the original as Louis opted not to restore the original but a build a new castle that could serve as a summer home. Today the castle can be visited and tours are conducted daily. (Cochem, Germany)
