Kolugljúfur - Photo by Helga Birna Jónasdóttir

Kolugljúfur is a tumbling set of waterfalls as the river Víðidalsá flows through a rugged gorge. There are many scenic views along the top of the Kolugljúfur canyon following the river as it flows towards the gorge edge. Both the gorge and the falls are named after a giantess once said to live in the area, Kola. She was said to sit on a nearby ledge at night and grab the salmon travelling up the water by hand, before throwing them in a nearby hot spring to cook them. (Víðidalstunga, Iceland)
