10 Questions with Robbie Arlow

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where you were born, where you're based out of?

I was born in Alliston, Ontario. Roughly 15 minutes down the road is Angus, where I’ve lived virtually my entire life. (Hopefully changing that soon and heading out to the Rockies!)

2. Do you shoot full time or part-time?

Right now I only shoot part time. I work as a mover but every second I have off I spend exploring, shooting, or editing in the hope of it becoming a full time career.

3. How did you get into photography?

How I got into photography is a slightly foolish story. In 2014 I was a competitor in Bisley England as part of the national rifle team, over the 9 weeks of traveling Europe they gave us $800 each for food and little souvenirs. Before I even left Canada I had went straight to Walmart and bought a Canon T3. I used virtually all my spending money for the entire trip on that camera. Armed with a crop sensor camera and the kit lens I took a pictures of every last thing I saw. I spent the summer learning the camera in and out, getting into all the manual settings. I took a few photos I loved, plus more then a few I hated, but I learned quite a bit. Unfortunately one thing lead to another and the camera was ruined in a canoeing accident while me and a friend were paddling the Nottowasaga River. A wet end to my love of photography.  Fast forward a few years my current girlfriend, and the love of my life, convinced me to get back into photography just before Christmas 2018, so I did. With her help I bought my first full frame camera. Still armed with just a kit lens I’m doing everything I can to make this my life.

4. Who would you say are your major photographic influences?

I feel it is kind of cliche but I’d have to say Peter Lik. I moved a few of his massive prints one day and fell in love with his large format, style, and quality of his work.

5. Is there a particular photo or shot that you’re most proud of?

I’m generally just as proud of every shot that I feel is worth editing and posting. Any shot that makes me smile and giggle after taking it is a shot I live to take.

6. Could you describe your shooting process ?

I have a vast knowledge of Ontario so I always have an idea of places I’d like to go shoot. Whenever I have enough time I take off, driving as far as my budget will allow and sometimes a bit further. I narrow down areas and just wait for the moment to appear.

7. What is your favorite photographic destination that you've been to and why?

My favourite area to photograph would definitely be Collingwood, Ontario. I have been there a million times but until I got back into photography, I never realized just how stunning the views paired with my memories were.

10. Where can folks find/see/buy more of your work?

If anyone would like to buy any prints they can always send me a DM on Instagram or email me at nikrophotography[at]gmail.com . I’m currently working on a website to bring my vision of a print shop to life, in the mean time all you have to do is ask!
