“The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it.”
— Ansel Adams

A quiet week for a change as the chill of fall starts to cut into the air up here in Canada. Just a few more weeks for us fair weather shooters. As always we have a great selection of photos to feature this week. Enjoy!

Roman Forum - Rome, Italy

This week’s feature shot goes to Dmitriy Don for this fantastic viewpoint of the Roman Forum. The Forum is a plaza of ruins at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, formerly a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or just the Forum.  For centuries the Forum was the center of day-to-day life in Rome: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs.

Galeone Neptune - Genoa, Italy

Yarrrrrr! We love this shot by Vinicius Melo of Galeone Neptune. The ship is a replica of a 17th-century Spanish galleon. Built-in 1985 for Roman Polanski’s film Pirates, where she portrayed the Spanish ship of the same name. An accurate reproduction above the waterline, but sporting a steel hull and a 400 HP auxiliary engine, the Neptune is currently a tourist attraction in the port of Genoa, where you can tour its interior.

Kidston Island Lighthouse - Baddeck, Nova Scotia Canada

Michel shares this great viewpoint looking out over the Baddeck Harbour as seen from Highway 205. This is a great spot to get a clear view of the Kidston Island Lighthouse. If you lucky a pirate sloop just might sail by.

Poll na bPeist - Inis Mor, Ireland

Scott Goldsworthy shares a fascinating location this week. Called the “Poll na bPeist”  (yes, that is the spelling) it is also known as the “Wormhole.” It is a natural rectangular shaped pool into which the sea ebbs and flows. Located at the bottom of cliffs south of Dun Aonghasa on the island of Inis Mor, Ireland. A remarkable place, the geological formation is a true testament to mother nature’s pure beauty and power.

Lone Pine Lake, California, USA

Doug Golupski submitted this shot last week and we didn’t have room in the newsletter for it. Well, this week we do and we are proud to feature this amazing viewpoint. This is Lone Pine Lake in the Whitney Portal Recreation Area with a beautiful magenta treatment.

La Grande Hermine - Ontario, Canada

I finally got around to adding this favourite spot of mine. This is Jordan Harbour just West of St Catherines in Ontario, Canada. The long-abandoned ship is called La Grande Hermine and is the forgotten replica of a ship that was navigated in 1535. The replica was built as a floating restaurant for Expo 67 and was moved to its present location in 1997. In 2003, a fire reduced the ship to a charred hulk. Today it sits as a surprising rusting landmark on the way to Niagara Falls. Once again, this is why Lisette and I founded PIXEO. Every photographer should know where this is.

Well, my day job takes me to Quebec this week, so I’m on the road. Rest assured I’ll be adding new locations along the way and while I’m there. I look forward to seeing what you all find this week, and we’ll see you next week.
