📰 Photography New Digest 📰

  • Canon rumours have been flying about their next entry into the mirrorless camera market. Well, it is confirmed that they will be releasing an 8K mirrorless camera. No word on a delivery date, but it sounds like Canon is getting serious about mirrorless. You can read the exclusive interview with Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi here.
  • There’s nothing like editing on a tablet display, but let’s be honest, they can be a bit pricey. Well if you’re like me and been desiring one for years, well, I’ve got good news. Don’t sell your first born just yet, the new Wacom Cintiq 16 HD is on the way with a sticker price of only $649.00 USD. Find out all about the 16 million pixel goodness at DPreview here.
  • Want to put your photographic skills to work changing the world? Check out the wonderful Photographers Without Borders organization. This amazing group focuses on making storytelling accessible for NGO charities. And don’t miss their latest great documentary, Beyond the Gun.
  • Including the sun in your shot can add that final pop to your landscape photos, but it can also be a nightmare during post-processing. Check out this great article on fstoppers on how to do sunburst processing.
  • Speaking of mirrorless, here’s a great and honest review of the Nikon z6. There are a thousand reviews on youtube of this camera, but Steve Huff’s review is probably the best I’ve seen. If you’re still on the fence about buying the new Nikon mirrorless, check out the review on his website here.

Ashley Garvin’s fantastic shot of a winding waterfall on the western peninsula of Iceland was a very close second. A lesser-known waterfall, as it is not on any maps, this is a spectacular secluded shooting location for your next Icelandic photography adventure.

Randal Penney shares a new view of the charming Quidi Vidi Harbour. An extremely picturesque Canadian location, this spot is not to be missed if you find yourself on the “Rock”. Thanks Randal and welcome to the PIXEO community!

Srijit Bhaumick takes us somewhere warm this week (much appreciated, it’s very cold where we are) with this lovely shot of the Kolkata Riverfront in India. This is a super spot to get a scenic view of Vidyasagar Setu. The Vidyasagar Setu is a 2-towered, cable-stayed bridge that is India’s longest with a span of 823 m. crossing over the Hooghly River.

Scott Goldsworthy captures a serene shot of the Bethlehem Luthern Church in Dalum. Constructed in 1929, this beautiful historic Danish church is an unexpected site along the otherwise uneventful Highway 56.

To close this week’s newsletter, here’s a beauty of an abandoned farmstead located just outside of Ottawa, Ontario. Easily shot from the road edge this one is a favourite of mine and other local photographers in the area. It can only be shot in winter though as the trees completely cover it in the summer.

More Locations, More Winners!

It’s been a great week for us here at PIXEO. We’re only halfway to the end of the month and just blown away by the quality and number of submissions this year. We can tell already that it will be a challenge picking a winner of the PIXEO Photo Challenge for the month of January. Let alone the annual PIXEO Photo of the Year.

In addition to the great spots submitted by our user’s, we have also been adding a bunch ourselves. Lisette went down a shipwreck rabbit hole and I’ve been tagging Cornwall, England all week. In the background, the great programmers at Mindsea in Halifax are still working on the web portal and we’re really hoping to make web upload and map browsing from the desktop a possibility for our users by April.

Thank you again for all your support and get snapping. We can’t wait to see what your contributions this week.
