This abandoned farmstead sits on the east side of Highway 49, a short distance south of Hamill. The house is single storey, with a hipped shingle roof and a brick chimney still upright. Board siding has gone grey and one end of the building has dropped in. You're looking east from the road, so late sun lands on the front of the house and sunrise comes up behind the farm. That backlight works if you want the roofline as a shape against the sky. Long lenses from the road will compress the buildings against the hills. Grass colour shifts hard through the year, gold by autumn and green in early summer. This is private ranch land. This area has been abandoned for a number of years so it is best to shoot from the road and stay outside the fence line. Highway 49 is generally quiet, so you should be able to take your time and experiment with various compositions. (Hamill, South Dakota, USA)
