The King Neptune Statue is a unique hidden gem sitting up on a hill in Two Rocks. The 10m tall limestone statue was built as the centrepiece of Atlantis Marine Park. The theme park originally opened in 1981 and closed about a decade later when the money ran out. The statue has been sitting abandoned ever since. As a shooting subject, it is a weird and wonderful thing. This massive Roman god just standing alone on a hill above a quiet coastal suburb with scrubby bush around it. The abandoned park grounds behind it still have remnant pathways, stone walls, palm trees, and a few other limestone sculptures scattered around, which gives the whole area a forgotten, slightly surreal feel. The park site is fenced off, but you can get quite close to the statue. Late afternoon light works well here. It side lights the statue and warms up the limestone. Wide angle from below looking up gives you Neptune against open sky, which really plays up the scale. Tighter shots of the weathered surface and trident detailing are worth experimenting with too.
