Kayaköy was once home to Greek Orthodox residents who settled here beginning in the 1700s. However, the city was abandoned in the 1920s due to a World War I treaty agreement when the Greek Orthodox inhabitants were not permitted to return to their homes to prevent bloodshed. What remains is approx 350 abandoned houses, two churches, public squares and fountains, all empty and deserted. This once-bustling community now slowly decays on the hillside. The area has become a private museum and remains of this once busy hillside village. (Kayaköy, Turkey)
