Aialik Glacier is a tidewater glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, where a wall of ancient blue ice meets the sea and calves massive chunks into the bay with dramatic effect. The face of the glacier is your primary subject, and you will want to position your boat as close as safety allows to fill the frame with that towering ice cliff, emphasizing its scale and the deep blue tones that emerge in the shadows and crevasses. A telephoto lens helps compress the ice face and isolate calving details, while a wide angle captures the full sweep of glacier meeting water. Overcast days actually work in your favor here, softening reflections on the water and preventing the white ice from blowing out. Keep your camera ready at all times since calving events happen without warning. Most visitors arrive via day tour boat from Seward, so plan your trip early in summer for the best ice conditions.
