This small white clapboard church sits quietly in Pikeville, carrying over 150 years of history as both a Freedmen's Bureau school and a place of worship. The simple, honest architecture rewards close attention, with peeling paint, weathered wood, and aged windows offering rich texture for detail shots. Work the exterior from a slight low angle to emphasize the modest scale against the sky, or move in tight with a standard or short telephoto lens to isolate the texture of the siding and historic signage. Overcast days are ideal, softening shadows and bringing out the subtlety of the white and grey tones without blown highlights. Early morning on a clear day can also work well, with raking sidelight revealing the wood grain across the facade. Parking and access are straightforward; take time to walk the full perimeter before settling on your compositions. (Pikeville, Tennessee, United States)
