Aradale Mental Hospital is one of Australia's largest and most atmospheric abandoned asylums, a sprawling Victorian-era complex of bluestone buildings, crumbling wards, and overgrown grounds that rewards photographers willing to explore its many layers. The weathered facades and arched windows make strong subjects on overcast days, when soft diffused light brings out the texture of the aged stonework without harsh shadows. Inside the accessible areas, long corridor shots with a wide angle lens create powerful leading lines, while details like peeling paint, rusted ironwork, and decaying furniture work well for tighter compositions. Early morning gives you the best chance of mist settling around the grounds, adding to the mood. Access is easiest through one of the organised ghost tours or heritage tours run on site, which also get you into areas otherwise closed to the public. A wide angle lens suits the architecture, but bring a fast prime for low light interior work. (Ararat, Victoria, Australia)
