About Arrowtown Masonic Lodge
The Arrowtown Masonic Lodge is an amazing little gem tucked away in the trees along Wiltshire Street. This small stone hall was originally built by the town's Freemasons in 1888, from locally quarried stone. To add to the lodge's photogenic setting, the door and front windows are painted a bright blue, following the old tradition of Scottish lodges. The lodge's traditional design lets you experiment with symmetry in your compositions. The front sits perfectly between to imposing trees with a small pathway leading directly to the eye catching blue door. If you have a longer lens in your kit you can play around with contrasts of the rich blues door against the rustic grey stonework. Soft light on a cloudy day makes the blue stand out, while low sun in the morning or evening brings out the rough texture of the stone. Although the local chapter of the Freemasons is no longer active, groups from Queenstown still hold their meetings here. Since it is still privately owned you will probably only be able to shoot it from the outside. The lodge does open to the public now and then but it will be more a lucky coincidence than something you can plan around. Plan some extra time so you can explore this old gold rush town.
