Auke Lake is a glacially carved freshwater lake just outside Juneau, offering stunning reflections of surrounding spruce and hemlock forests against a dramatic mountain backdrop. The calm morning hours give you the best chance at mirror-like reflections on the water's surface, so aim to arrive around sunrise when mist often lingers over the lake and the light is soft and directional. The Auke Lake Trail circles the entire shoreline and gives you access to multiple compositions, from wide-angle shots capturing the full mountain panorama to tighter frames focusing on forested inlets and rocky edges. A wide-angle lens works well for expansive landscape shots, while a short telephoto helps isolate the peaks. Access is straightforward from Glacier Highway at the south end or Mendenhall Loop Road to the north, with parking available at both. Overcast days are also productive here, as diffused light brings out the deep greens of the forest. (Juneau, Alaska, United States)
