Avon Five Arch Bridge
This abandoned 19th-century railroad bridge offers a striking combination of industrial stonework and natural surroundings, with five graceful elliptical arches reflected in the calm water below. The symmetry of the arches makes a strong central composition from the water level, and shooting straight-on from the bank gives you a classic, balanced frame. You can also move to the side to compress the arches and emphasize the depth of the structure. The rough-cut limestone has excellent texture that responds well to the raking light of early morning or late afternoon, when shadows bring out the detail in the stonework. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full span, while a longer focal length lets you isolate individual arches and their reflections. The area is accessible on foot, and the flat riverbank gives you flexibility to move around and find your angle. (Avon, New York, United States)
