Baltinglass Abbey is a striking set of Cistercian ruins dating to 1148, set along the banks of the River Slaney in the heart of County Wicklow. The standing arches, carved stone columns, and remnants of the nave create natural frames that reward wide to mid-range focal lengths, with a 24-70mm being a strong choice. Position yourself along the interior aisle to use the repeating arches as leading lines, or move in close on the decorative stonework and worn inscriptions for detail shots. Overcast days are ideal here, as soft diffused light eliminates harsh shadows inside the ruins and brings out the texture in the ancient limestone. Early morning visits give you the best chance of having the site to yourself. The abbey is freely accessible and sits right on the edge of Baltinglass town, making it easy to combine with other stops. (Baltinglass, County Wicklow, Ireland)
