About Bantham Beach
Bantham Beach sits tucked away in the South Devon National Landscape where the River Avon flows out into the English Channel. This long stretch of waterfront offers beautiful scenery with panoramic views over Bigbury Bay and the famous Burgh Island (you can even see its 1920's hotel on clear days). The tide changes everything here. During low tide the beach is wide with thick wet sand and the river winding through the middle of it out toward the island. High tide takes all of it away leaving you just a vast view of water in every direction with the island popping up in the middle of it. The beach opens to the west, so the island sit in the sun through the afternoon, which creates a silhouette or a flat shape against bright water. Morning light comes over the dunes and lands on the island's face. Climbing in the surrounding dunes lets you experiment with using height to stack the channel and the surf line against the island. A longer lens will at the historic hotel to your compositions. The beach, the car park, and the village are all part of the Bantham Estate, so you will have to pay to park. This area does get busy on warm weekends and during tourist season so you may have to come early if you want the beach to yourself. (Bantham, Devon, England)
