Barnhart Island Bridge

Barnhart Island Bridge - Photo by Terry Branham1 / 1

This steel truss bridge spans Polly's Bay along the St. Lawrence River, offering a striking industrial composition against a wide, open waterway. The bridge's repeating truss framework makes for strong geometric shots, especially when you position yourself at one end and use the structure as a leading line extending toward the opposite shore. The St. Lawrence provides a reflective foreground when conditions are calm, and the surrounding low terrain means big skies are a constant part of your frame. Shoot during golden hour for warm light raking across the metal framework, or try overcast days when soft, even light reduces harsh shadows within the trusses. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full span in context with the river, while a medium telephoto lets you compress the structure against the water. Access is straightforward via road, and you can find solid vantage points from the shoreline near either end. (Massena, New York, United States)
