Built in the early twentieth century and modeled after the Sacré-Cœur in Paris, this Roman-Byzantine basilica rises dramatically above the surrounding neighborhood with its pale stone facade, arched windows, and distinctive domed towers. The front facade is your primary subject, and a wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full symmetry of the twin towers and ornate entrance from street level. Step back to the opposite side of the street to get the complete composition without distortion, or move in close to isolate the carved stonework and archways as detail shots. Overcast days are ideal since they eliminate harsh shadows across the textured facade, though the soft golden light of late afternoon can add warmth to the stone. Inside, the vaulted ceilings and stained glass reward a wide lens and a tripod if you can bring one. The church is located in the Barrio Yungay area and is accessible by foot or metro.
