About Basílica de Maria Auxiliadora y San Carlos
On a busy corner in Almagro, Buenos Aires, the Basílica de María Auxiliadora y San Carlos (Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians and Saint Charles) stands tall over the surrounding neighbourhood. It's quite eye catching with its intricate red brick and white stone exterior. Over the main doors sits a marble Christ that was carved from a single white block. The far end of the roof hold a soaring eight sided dome holding a lantern topped by a detailed statue of Mary. In order to fit the whole church in one frame you will have to cross to the far side of Avenida Hipólito Yrigoyen. Since the church sits along a narrow street you won't have a lot of space to work so you may have to get creative with your shooting angles. Walking along Quintino Bocayuva will give you the side entrance and usually a cleaner angle on the dome. A telephoto lens with let you highlight the dome's lantern and statue against an open sky. Inside, design is breathtaking with intricate details and pops of colour everywhere you look. The interior is lined with soaring columns painted in repeating stripes that will fill your frame with incredible lines. The vaults are painted deep blue and scattered with stars, and on sunny days the stained glass spreads colour across the nave. You are free to enter and explore the church, but remember it is still part of an active parish so give worshippers their space and privacy. (Buenos Aires, Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina)
