Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart, located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, is a magnificent example of French Gothic Revival architecture. Completed in the late 19th century, the basilica features a 218-foot bell tower, intricate stonework, and over 40 stained glass windows that bathe the interior in colored light. Inside, richly painted murals, vaulted ceilings, and ornate altars provide stunning detail for low-light and architectural photography. The building is best captured during golden hour when the soft exterior light enhances the stone façade and spire. Open to the public with certain restrictions during services, the basilica is a centerpiece of the Notre Dame campus and an essential stop for photographing religious architecture in the Midwest.
