Blind Pond

Blind Pond - Photo by Terry Branham1 / 1

Blind Pond is a small, secluded lake in the Catskills that rewards photographers with glassy reflections, forested shorelines, and a quiet intimacy that larger reservoirs lack. The still water picks up surrounding tree canopy beautifully, making wide compositions that include both the sky and its mirror image especially effective. Early morning is the prime window, when mist often hovers above the surface and the light is soft and diffuse before the wind picks up and breaks the reflection. A wide angle lens helps capture the full sweep of the treeline wrapping around the water, while a short telephoto lets you isolate details like mist layers or autumn foliage. Access is relatively easy via a short walk, but the pond sees little traffic, so arriving at first light typically means having the scene to yourself. Fall color peaks here in mid to late October and transforms the reflected canopy into something exceptional. (Eldred, New York, United States)
