Bab Bou Jeloud is one of the most iconic gateways in Morocco, a tripled-arched masterpiece built in 1913 that marks the main entrance to the ancient medina of Fes el Bali. The ornate tilework is the real draw here, with deep cobalt blue on the exterior facade and sage green on the interior side, each covered in intricate geometric zellige patterns that reward a close lens as much as a wide one. Shoot the exterior facade straight-on in the early morning when the light is soft and the crowds are thin, or work the narrow street just inside the gate for a view back through the arches framing the medina beyond. A wide angle in the 16 to 24mm range captures the full scale of the three arches, while a longer focal length pulls out the tile detail. Midday light is harsh here, so aim for the golden hour when warm tones complement the blue perfectly. (Fez, Morocco)
