About Bob Kerrey Bridge
Two white pylons carry the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge across the Missouri River, linking the Omaha riverfront with Council Bluffs on the Iowa bank. Steel cables drop from each pylon to the bridge deck as it flows in a long S curve over the river. The bridge spans the Nebraska and Iowa state line, so as you cross you can stand with a foot in each state. After dark the cables and pylons light up with colour changing LEDs, that change regularly to highlight various holidays and events. Downstream to the southwest, the Omaha skyline rises over the trees along the bank. A large wooden troll sculpture by Thomas Dambo sits at the Omaha end. There is lots of space along the bridge and in the riverfront parks to shoot from the base of a pylon looking along the deck as the steel cables flow into a tight web overhead. Or you can set up in the park using a longer lens to compresses both pylons into one layered frame. The S curve can be highlighted from the riverbank, the air or the ramps, and dropping down to the water level on the Omaha side lets you experiment with it. Since the bridge span runs east to west, the sunrise and sunset follows along with the flow of the bridge. Aim to come and shoot the lighting at blue hour, while there is still colour in the sky to hold the white steel and the intricate LED system starts to come on for the night. The bridge sits in a popular park so it usually gets busy on weekends, and it does close sometimes because of ice or high winds. (Omaha, Nebraska, United States)
