Bonticou Crag
Bonticou Crag is a dramatic white conglomerate rock formation rising above the tree line in the Shawangunk Ridge, offering wide open views across the Hudson Valley and surrounding forest. The crag itself is the subject as much as the backdrop, so work both angles: shoot back from the open ledge to capture the sweeping valley panorama, or position yourself lower on the approach to frame the pale, sculpted rock face against the sky. A wide angle lens handles the expansive views well, while a short telephoto helps compress the layered ridgelines in the distance. Golden hour light in the morning or late afternoon adds warmth to the white rock and long shadows across the terrain. The final approach involves a short scramble over open rock, so wear sturdy footwear and give yourself extra time. The trail starts from the Spring Farm Trailhead parking area.
