BOZAR sits on rue Ravenstein in central Brussels, and is quite eye catching with its Art Deco design. The building features geometric shapes and is faced in Belgian bluestone. When it was built the site came with the condition that it could not block the view from the higher ground. So although it is eight floors only three of them are visibile from street level. From along rue Ravenstein it appears to be long and low, and a wide frame down the pavement suits it. But inside it feels much bigger and open. Horta Hall is the main space, skylit and squared off. Shooting up into the light lets the geometry stack. Stairs, railings and fittings all repeat the same lines, so its easy to find leading lines everywhere you shoot. The Henry Le Bœuf concert hall is the other set piece. A guided Horta tour covers the Art Deco details and is the most reliable way to see the architecture itself. Some spaces open only for concerts, and photography rules vary by exhibition, so make sure to ask at the desk. (Brussels, Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium)
