Bright Autumn Colours in Bright, Ontario
This is the perfect spot to shoot an autumn scene at the back of a field on Township Road 14. Why do trees not change their colours all at once? Leaves are colored by molecules called pigments. Chlorophyll is a pigment that causes leaves to be green; and is important for plants to make food using sunlight. In autumn, when it starts to get cold, some plants stop making chlorophyll and break it down into smaller molecules. As chlorophyll goes away, other pigments start to show their colors. Carotenoids pigments are yellow and orange; anthocyanin pigments cause red, pink, or purple colors and also protect leaves from being eaten or sunburned. So it takes time and energy for the tree to transform itself to survive the Winter and come back with new life in the Spring. (Bright, Ontario, Canada)
