The Bronx River Waterfall is the only natural waterfall in New York City, tucked inside the New York Botanical Garden where the river drops over a ledge of exposed schist bedrock, creating a surprisingly wild scene within one of the most urban environments in the world. The falls are modest in size but beautifully framed by overhanging trees and rocky outcroppings, making them feel far removed from the city around them. You get the best compositions from the footbridge just downstream, where you can frame the cascade with the river leading toward you. A wide to mid-range lens works well here. Overcast days are ideal since the soft, diffused light reduces harsh shadows and brings out the greens in the surrounding foliage. Visit in spring when water levels are higher, or in fall for warm leaf color surrounding the scene. (The Bronx, New York, United States)
