Rising nearly 750 meters from the Antarctic Sound, this striking tuya volcano offers one of the most dramatic backdrops you will find anywhere on Earth. The rust-colored and black cliffs form a near-vertical wall above a pebble beach, giving you a powerful layered composition with ice-flecked water in the foreground, the dark volcanic rock in the mid-ground, and often snow-capped peaks behind. Shoot wide to capture the full scale of the bluff against the sky, or go tight on the Adelie penguins that congregate on the beach, using the cliff face as a textured background. The overcast light common in Antarctica is actually ideal here, softening reflections on the water and bringing out the rich ochre tones in the rock. Access is by Zodiac landing from expedition vessels, so a 24-70mm or a longer zoom around 100-400mm will cover both landscapes and wildlife. (Antarctic Sound, Antarctica)
