Buttermilk Rd Falls
Buttermilk Road Falls is a hidden roadside waterfall tucked just off a rural road in central New York, where a stream drops over layered rock into a mossy gorge below. The falls are easy to miss by sight, but the sound gives them away, so slow down and listen as you approach. From the roadside pulloff you can shoot straight toward the cascade with a wide to mid-range lens, using the surrounding foliage as a natural frame. Overcast days are ideal here since the soft, diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and brings out the greens and textures in the rock. If you want to get closer to the base, be aware the descent is steep and the terrain is slippery, so wear good footwear and use caution. A polarizing filter will help cut glare on the water and deepen the colors in the surrounding vegetation. (New Berlin, New York, United States)
