About Cadillac Ranch
Cadillac Ranch is an amazing gem sitting tucked away in a flat pasture just west of Amarillo. This quirky piece of public are is made from a series of ten old Cadillacs buried nose first with their tail fins pointing to the sky in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. Decades of spray paint have built up on the cars softening the cars' crisp edges in ever changing layers of hot pink, lime and blue over bare rusted steel. Since these cars sit all along in a endless feeling field there is a lot of space to experiment with finding just the right compositions to suit your shooting style. You can try getting low with a wide angle lens to let the fins tower over you against open sky, or step back and line the cars up so they overlap down the row. You can get right beside the cars if you prefer close up or abstract photography to highlight the chipping and peeling patches of paint showing the older colours underneath. The pasture is wide open, so early morning and late afternoon light spreads across the paint and brings out its texture. At both sunset and sunrise you can walk around the row and place the sun behind the fins to create amazing silhouettes. The site sits just off the south side of Interstate 40, you will have to park on the dirt shoulder along I-40 Frontage Rd, not directly along the I-40. It is a short walk to the cars and access is always free plus painting the cares is encouraged, so bring a can or two if you want to add your own layer. (Amarillo, Texas, United States)
