The Carillon Generating Station is a large hydroelectric dam complex straddling the Ottawa River, offering a striking combination of industrial architecture, rushing water, and natural scenery. The spillway gates are the main draw, especially when they are open and throwing dramatic curtains of white water, which work well with a telephoto lens to compress the cascades against the concrete structure. A wider angle helps when you want to show the full scale of the dam stretching across the river. The surrounding park gives you elevated viewpoints along the bank where you can shoot across the water with strong leading lines from the dam wall. Early morning light is ideal, keeping the sun at your back and the glare off the water. The area is easily walkable, with paved paths that bring you close to the water's edge for low-angle compositions. (Carillon, Quebec, Canada)
