Carter's Bridge is a classic single-span steel truss bridge crossing the Yellowstone River south of Livingston, Montana, surrounded by open ranchland and mountain backdrops that make it far more photogenic than its utilitarian purpose suggests. The bridge itself works well as a subject from the riverbanks below, where you can frame the truss structure against the Absaroka Range to the southeast, especially when snow dusts the peaks. Get down to the water's edge to use the river as a foreground element, or shoot from mid-bank to capture reflections on calm mornings. Early morning light is ideal, with soft golden tones raking across the metal structure and the mountains catching alpenglow. A wide-angle lens handles the full scene well, while a short telephoto lets you compress the bridge against the distant peaks. The road and banks are accessible without difficulty, and the area stays relatively uncrowded. (Livingston, Montana, United States)
