Cathedral of St. Joseph
The Cathedral of St. Joseph is a striking mid-century Gothic structure clad in Alabama limestone, and its interior is where the real photographic rewards are. The stained glass windows, crafted in Paris, flood the nave with richly colored light that shifts dramatically depending on the time of day and season. Morning light on the south-facing windows gives you warm, saturated color; overcast days can actually work well here by softening contrast and letting the glass glow evenly. Position yourself at the back of the nave with a wide-angle lens to capture the full depth of the space and the ceramic tile mural of "Christ in Glory" above the altar as your anchor point. Look for symmetry along the central aisle, or step to the sides for angled compositions that layer the windows with the architecture. Arrive when the cathedral is open and quiet for the best conditions. (Hartford, Connecticut, United States)
