About Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur
Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur was built in 1956 to become the new cathedral in the capital after the Cathedral of Saint Philip of Algiers reconverted into the Ketchaoua Mosque. The design was inspired by the verse in the Gospel of John that reads, "God has pitched his tent among us". This tent effect is delivered by the cathedral's soaring dome, which rises 35 meters above the floor. It rests on eight piers, raised above four columns and gives the appearance of floating on air.
