About Cementerio Judaico

Cementerio Judaico (Miara Jewish Cemetery) is a walled burial ground at the southeast edge of the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter of the Marrakech. It dates back to the 1500s and is still in use today. Instead of upright headstones, the grounds are covered in low, rounded, whitewashed mounds lined up in tight rows. Hebrew inscriptions run across many of them, and a handful are painted blue, which marks the graves of kohanim. A small whitewashed building near the back holds the tombs of several revered rabbis. The grounds pair will with a wide lens to let the rows stretch away toward the walls, or you can focus on the small details of individual graves by picking out the cracked whitewash, the Hebrew lettering, and/or the small stones left on top of the graves. There is a small entry fee to be paid at the gatehouse, and men are given a kippah to wear while inside the grounds. Since this is still an active cemetery make sure to be respectful and give other visitors their space. The cemetery is closed to all visitors on Saturdays. (Marrakech, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco)
