Central Methodist Episcopal Church

First United Methodist Church sits on Central Avenue in downtown Hot Springs. It's a low Gothic Revival church from 1914, that was built for the local congregation that originally formed in 1852. It's a large Gothic Revival building in pale, cream-coloured stone. A series of tall stained glass windows are the centrepiece of the exterior, with stone pinnacles and a notched parapet completing the symmetrical front. Stepping back across Central Avenue lets you highlight the symmetry and the intricate acrchitectural details as a whole. You can easily walk down the side to capture the row of buttresses and pointed windows. The cream stone works the best with warm light, so early morning or the last hour of sun are the perfect times to plan around. You can only get inside around service times, so it may be tricky to capture. The interior feels completely different that the exterior with it's dark wood and a big pipe organ. It's an active church on a public corner, so the outside is free to shoot any day with lots of space to experiment with your compositions. The Christian Education Building sitting next door is also worth shooting with it's curving two-storey colonnade and a large mosaic of Christ. Sunday mornings get quite busy with services and parked cars, so plan for a weekday visit to give the worshippers their space. (Hot Springs, Arkansas, United States)
