Chacaltaya is one of the most haunting and visually striking abandoned sites in South America, a crumbling ski resort perched at 17,519 feet in the Bolivian Andes where a glacier once existed and now only bare rock and remnants of infrastructure remain. The ruined lodge, rusting lift towers, and fractured concrete set against the dramatic high-altitude peaks make for powerful documentary-style compositions. Shoot wide to include the barren landscape and the skeletal lift structures together, or get close on peeling paint and weathered details with a macro or short telephoto lens. Midday light is harsh but reveals the stark textures of the rock and ruins clearly; golden hour brings warmer tones and long shadows across the ridgeline. The drive from La Paz takes around 90 minutes on rough road, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended. Altitude sickness is a real concern, so acclimatize in La Paz first before attempting the climb.
