Chapel of the Cross
Built in 1848, this small Gothic Revival Episcopal church sits quietly among mature trees in Chapel Hill, making it one of the most naturally framed historic subjects in the area. The warm-toned stone exterior and steeply pitched slate roof photograph beautifully in soft, diffused light, so overcast days or the golden hour just after sunrise work especially well to bring out the texture without harsh shadows. Shoot from the front path to use the tree canopy as a natural frame, or work the side and rear angles where the cemetery adds layers of depth and historical atmosphere. A 24-70mm lens covers most compositions here, from wide environmental shots to tighter details on the arched windows and wooden doors. Street parking is available nearby and the grounds are generally accessible during daylight hours. (Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States)
