Charles Church is a striking 17th-century ruin sitting at the center of a busy roundabout in Plymouth, preserved as a memorial to the civilians killed in the Plymouth Blitz. The contrast between the roofless stone shell and the surrounding modern city makes it a compelling subject, and you can frame it against contemporary buildings to emphasize that tension between old and new. Shoot through the empty gothic windows for layered compositions, or use a wide angle to capture the full ruin with traffic light trails circling around it at night. Long exposures after dark work particularly well here, turning passing cars into streaks of light that wrap around the church. Getting close to the structure requires navigating the roundabout on foot, so use the pedestrian crossings and work from the pavement surrounding it. A 24-70mm lens covers most compositions comfortably. (Plymouth, Devon, England)
