At the top of Cottonwood Falls' brick paved Broadway St stands the Chase County Courthouse, a white limestone building crowned with a steep red roof and a clock tower. Finished in 1873, it is the oldest still working courthouse in Kansas and the stone was quarried right in town. That steep red roof gives the building a look you do not expect on the prairie. Standing down Broadway creates a leading line with the brick street as it runs straight up to the courthouse's clock tower. Traffic is light, so you can usually wait out the odd car and get the empty brick street as a clean line. The low sun spreads along the brick and warms the pale stone either early or later in the day, avoiding the harsher midday light. A clear blue sky makes the red roof and white walls pop. Inside, a beautiful three story walnut staircase spirals up through the center of the building so it is worth planning your shoot around it's weekday open hours. (Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, USA)
