A 17th century architectural masterpiece, Vaux-le-Vicomte was the backdrop to many major historical events and witnessed the tragic eviction of its creator, Nicolas Fouquet, following an extraordinary trial. To build his home, he enlisted the services of three of the greatest artists of the era: the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape gardener André Le Nôtre and the painter and decorator Charles Le Brun. Here, they united their genius to build a model whose majesty and balance inspired King Louis XIV at Versailles and then the whole of Europe for over a century. (Maincy, France)
