This 1882 stone arch railway bridge spans South Kinnikinnick Creek in rural Illinois, offering a rare chance to photograph a well-preserved piece of 19th-century railroad infrastructure surrounded by natural woodland. The bridge's rough-cut limestone construction and graceful arch reflect beautifully in the creek below when water levels are calm, making a low angle from the creek bank one of the most rewarding compositions. You can also walk the Stone Bridge Trail to frame the bridge from either end, using the arch as a natural frame or shooting straight on to emphasize its symmetry. Overcast days work particularly well here, softening shadows on the textured stonework and reducing harsh contrast. The surrounding tree canopy means golden hour light filters through nicely in autumn, when fall color adds depth to the scene. A wide-to-standard zoom handles most compositions comfortably, and the trail access makes it easy to explore multiple angles. (Roscoe, Illinois, United States)
