Chicago & North Western Railway swing bridge
This disused railroad swing bridge spans the Milwaukee River with its massive open swing span frozen in the rotated position, creating a striking industrial subject full of rust, rivets, and weathered steel. You can shoot from the riverbank or nearby walkways to frame the bridge against the water, using the geometry of the truss work as leading lines or graphic patterns. Getting low near the water's edge lets you capture reflections of the structure on calm mornings, while shooting upward emphasizes the scale and decay of the ironwork. Overcast days work particularly well here, softening shadows and bringing out the warm rust tones without harsh contrast. A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most compositions, though a wide angle helps when shooting close to the structure. The area is accessible on foot and the riverbank gives you room to experiment with framing. (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States)
