About Chimney Pond
Chimney Pond is a small mountain pond sitting on the floor of the Great Basin tucked away in Baxter State Park. It's fed by snow melt and runoff from the slopes above so it sits as a peaceful little gem surrounded by wilderness. On a calm day the surface goes still enough to reflect the rugged walls surrounding it. Those granite walls rise on three sides of the pond, running from Pamola Peak along the jagged Knife Edge to Baxter Peak, the highest point in Maine, and around to Hamlin Ridge. The basin opens to the east, so the early morning light spreads softly across the pond. Clouds often sit on the summit ridge, so watch the weather and be ready when it lifts. The pond is accessible from along the Chimney Pond Trail that climbs 5.3 km from Roaring Brook Campground with many scenic views as it winds past the Basin Ponds. Baxter State Park charges non residents for vehicle entry, and day hikers will need a parking reservation at Roaring Brook Campground to use their parking lots. You will want to plan on starting your hike early in the day because the Roaring Brook lot fills first thing. The pond has a ranger station and a small campground if you are interested in being set up before sunrise or staying after sunset. (Northeast Piscataquis, Maine, United States)
