Classic Matterhorn Viewpoint - Photo by Public1 / 1

This iconic viewpoint along the Matterhorn Glacier Trail gives you the postcard composition that has defined alpine photography for generations: the pyramidal peak of the Matterhorn reflected in a small glacial lake, with rocky moraine and snow in the foreground. Position yourself low near the water's edge to maximize the reflection, and use a wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range to capture both the peak and the landscape context. Early morning is ideal, when wind is calm and the water's surface holds a clean mirror image; midday light can be harsh on the snow and rock. The trail is accessible from Trockener Steg via cable car from Zermatt, and the walk to this point is moderate but at high altitude, so acclimatize beforehand. Polarizing filters help cut glare on the water and deepen the sky. (Zermatt, Valais, Switzerland)
