Clifton Viaduct is a striking 13-arch Victorian railway structure built in 1846 to carry trains across the Irwell Valley, and its sheer scale and abandoned state make it a compelling subject for architectural and landscape photography. The viaduct stretches impressively across the valley floor, giving you options to shoot from below looking up at the arches for a strong sense of drama and symmetry, or from a distance to capture the full span within its green valley setting. Overcast days work particularly well here, softening the light and bringing out the texture of the weathered stone without harsh shadows cutting across the arches. Getting down low beneath the arches with a wide angle lens emphasizes their height and repetition, while a longer focal length from the valley slopes lets you compress the structure against the surrounding landscape. The site is accessible on foot and the area beneath and around the viaduct gives you room to explore multiple angles. (Clifton, Greater Manchester, England)
