Tucked away at the western end of La Concha bay, on the rocky point below Monte Igueldo, the Peine del Viento is one of San Sebastián's amazing hidden gems. Comb of the Wind is a unique piece of public art that combines three steel sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, each around 10 tonnes, anchored into the rocks at the water's edge. The surrounding plaza has blowholes built into the stone that shoot air and water upward as waves come in. There are two main shooting subjects here. The first is the steel sculptures themselves against the open sea, best with a low angle or a longer lens to catch a waves breaking around them. The rusted iron stands out well against grey storm water or warm low sun. The second is the blowholes, which erupt in columns of spray at high tide or in a swell, good for motion shots. The granite plaza gives clean foreground lines back toward the bay. Sunset is the usual window since the steel sculptures face to the west. On rough days the rocks and plaza get slippery, waves can come over the edge so keep back to protect both yourself and your gear. During storms the whole plaza is sometimes closed for the safety of visitors so check the weather before heading out on your shooting adventure. (Paseo Eduardo Chillida, San Sebastián, Spain)
