About Crackington Haven
Crackington Haven is a lovely shingle cove dominated by majestic cliffs and offering a stretch of golden sand, along with rock pools when the tide is out. Tall cliffs close in on both sides, and the rock in them is why geologists come here. The layers are folded into tight zigzags, and the pattern takes its name from this place, the Crackington Formation. Ideally plan your photography adventure around low tide. Cobbles and boulders cover the upper beach, and the sand only appears as the water pulls back. Low tide also uncovers a flat rock shelf covered in ridges that have slowly been created by the tides moving in and out over hundreds of years. Those ridges make perfect leading lines. Getting down low lets you shoot along a ridge with the lines leading your eye toward the cliffs. Streams cut across the sand to the sea, which gives you another line to follow. The bay faces west, so sunset drops straight into it creating amazing colours. Winter brings bigger swells and creates a more dynamic composition. The car park sits behind the beach in the village, plus there is a pub, a couple of cafés right by the sand so you can wait for just the right light or tide levels.
