About Cygnet Bay

Cygnet Bay sits at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula and is home to Australia's oldest pearl farm, started by Dean Brown in 1946 and still run by the family four generations on. The bay sits in one of the biggest tropical tidal zones on the planet. At low tide the water pulls way back and exposes huge tidal flats covered in textures and patterns. The reef platforms drain and create waterfall effects as the water flows off them, which is a phenomenon worth timing your visit around. The landscape here is classic coastal views: turquoise water, ochre red rock, white sand, and mangroves lining the shore. The tidal movement means the scene changes completely every few hours so plan to stay for most of the day to experience the full range of tidal changes. On the water you might spot turtles, dolphins, and seabirds, and during migration season humpback whales pass through. The pearl farm itself adds to the bay's charm. Oyster cages suspended in the water, old lugger boats, and the working infrastructure of the farm all have a nice documentary quality to them. Accommodation ranges from camping and caravan sites to glamping tents and original pearling shacks, so you can base yourself right on the coast. After dark there is zero light pollution, which makes it a strong astrophotography spot. The farm also runs pearl tours, sea safaris, and cultural experiences with the local Bardi Jawi people if you want to go deeper on the area. (Ardyaloon, Western Australia, Australia)
